What is Google Adwords? How does it help to promote your business on the Internet?

What is Adwords?

Whenever you do a google search, do you ever notice that some results are displayed in yellow boxes at the top and right of the normal search results? These are actually advertisements from businesses that are using Google's Adwords services.

Google Adwords is a Pay-Per-Click(PPC) advertising service that Google provides to businesses to have a short text-based Ad displayed on relevant Google search results. You only need to pay when a user clicks on your Ad instead of a fixed recurrent fee. This is a very useful tool and is currently the main source of revenue for Google.

How does Adwords work?

You start off by creating an Ad with a headline, a brief description of your business or products, and the link you want the Ad to transport the user to when the Ad is clicked on.

Next, you define a set of keywords that is relevant to the content of your website. This is a crucial step as it determines whether your ad will be displayed when a user performs a google search using keywords. An important thing to remember when choosing keywords is to use only keywords that are relevant to your website. Google will do an automated check on your website and determine for themselves which keywords you have entered are relevant. Having too many keywords that are irrelevant may harm your ranking in the displayed ads. This is one area in which a knowledgeable web marketing person can help you select the right keywords as well as keywords that are actually being searched by normal users.


The next step after defining the keywords is to assign a bid amount to each keyword. As this is a PPC service, you have to define how much you are willing to pay when your Ad is clicked on. This amount also affects how high your Ad will rank compared to other businesses that are using similar keywords. Naturally, the higher amount you specify, the higher chance of your Ad being shown more prominently. However, once again, this is tempered by how relevant Google sees the searched keyword is to your website's content. This means that you can set a very high amount but it may not guarantee you a top placement.

This is a constant adjustment process as bids can vary from week to week depending on what other businesses do. You will need to monitor your bids to ensure that your keywords maintain at least a first page placement. If you do not have the time or energy to do this yourself, you can hand it over to experienced people or companies who provide such services at a reasonable rate.
